Klaas, How did you become a Winemaker?
I grew up on our family farm in the Swartland where we farm with vineyards. I always wanted to do a job where you can blend nature and science and winemaking was the perfect combination!
If you were a Grape, which one would you be?
I think Shiraz – It has good structure and depth but can be very versatile.
What is important to you in your winemaking style?
The fruit must always be the dominant factor in the wine. All the other stuff like acid, wood, tannins etc. must just be added / used to enhance the wine but not to over-power the fruit. We strive for perfection everyday and with a good team effort we will get there. Balance and complexity is King.
Who in the Wine World, would you love to share a bottle of Wine with?
My wife is also in the wine world…so I prefer to have it with her…
When are you visiting Berlin next?
Next year after Prowein I will probably spend a few days in Berlin.
If we could only try one of your Wines, which do you recommend and why?
It’s like choosing between your children…it’s impossible…I will recommend people to try everything!!
