Ben, How do you describe your Wines?
Ben Larks, (Left) and Ari Heavner (Right)
Idle wines are new world wines created in an old world fashion. Using organic methods to create fruit forward, soft tannin wines.
2. What is your most favorite part of the Day?
Everyday is different in the wine world, many hats are worn from vineyard to winemaking to sales, all depending on parts of the year. During harvest, right after the pick when we are sorting the fruit from the bunk grapes, leaves and stems....it is usually first thing in the morning since we pick the grapes when it is dark out, being able to go through all the cool clusters to determine what rules, tasting the grapes ever so often, the sounds of sorter and music joining together, becoming sticky and purple. It is exciting...what will these kids become.
3. Tell us the story behind your Label and the name of your Winery.
The label was created from an evening with water coloring on parchment paper with the assistance of many bottles of vino. Idle has a couple meanings....first is comes from jazz musician Grant Green's song, Idle Moments. It goes on a groovy ride for 15 minutes, opening up different layers, in depth and loose. We took that idea of idle to a place where we all need to be idle, sometimes. We stress about everything too much, to take a step back, to be present with wine, friends, environment you are in, to cut out the noise and to just be.
4. What non-work activity do you enjoy the most?
Introducing people to the wine for the first time. Of course that might be considered as an activity.
5. Are there any regrets that you have in your Winemaking life?
Winemaking is cooking with nature, you have a recipe with what you want to do, but Momma Nature has other ideas and you learn to work with her. Since wine is something that changes with age, it all becomes a learning experience. Might taste better later then now or vice versa. Hard to have regrets when there is constant evolution of the wine.
6. Are people able to visit you and take a tour of your Vineyard?
We do private, one-on-one tours where a tour of either winery, vineyard with some tasting afterwards.
7. Any random or surprising fact you want to share?
Everyone, well mostly everyone drinks. With so much tension in the world these days, wine gets people from all walks of life, lets them sit, brings a connection
8. Which Wine region in the world do you love the most?
Lately I have been loving the white wines from Minho, Portugal. Crisp, acidity, fresh wines from a lush green region being fed by some pure rivers.
9. Where would you go if you never had to work again?
Everywhere, the world has too much too offer, too experience, too taste, too feel.
10. Which Wine of yours are you most excited about?
The Grenache Blanc....it is a surprising dry crisp wine with some bad ass natural colors. The GB grape is wild and playful. When your eyes see her, your palate takes you on a wicked adventure that you never saw coming.
